I am working on a whole new reading of the story in which this is,
in fact, exactly what happened. We've made the metonymic leap from
bananas to apples in the past, and the distance between bananafish
and great white sharks is covered just as easily, I think. I'll
post details as they arrive. I speculate a now-lost passage from
the original "ur" bananafish story (pre-revision) in which the
suicide turns out to be a dream sequence experienced by a delirious
Seymour, reeling from loss of blood as he clings to a sharkravaged
rubber float. Also, the character Sybil, I have reason to believe,
was originally a young male child named Garnyldon Endicott.
