Is the Ortgies simple logistics? Were WWII vets not allowed to keep their
pistols? Why the Ortgies? Any ideas?

The Ortgies 7.65 was a German made pistol. Many of the Ortgies were cocked
by sqeezing the grip which released the safety and cocked the weapon,
remember Seymour "cocked the piece".
Why a German pistol? Maybe symbolism, maybe not.
The attached picture is of a smaller calibre Ortgies.
Seymour's pistol probably would have looked like this except on a larger
frame.
