[I’m going to reply to Matt’s message since he did such a fine editing job
with the original.]

Listen, folks. If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we’d all have a very
merry Christmas.

But that’s not the case, and I think that speculating on such things is a
waste of time. If Michael Jordan took all his money and donated it to the
housing projects at Cabrini Green, would that make a difference? Probably.
A little. (One could certainly get into a debate over just how much and for
how long and what other things might be messed up as a result, an idea that
was, I think, Matt’s point.)

But does that make Jordan a bad guy for hooking up with Warner Brothers and
Nike and Chevrolet and Pepsi and the Washington Wizards and (...well, you
get the idea)? Probably not. (I take that back: maybe the Wizards part
might.) My point is that it’s easy to make something without a face, like a
church, into a “bad” thing, while it’s a little more difficult to do the
same when confronting the same idea in a person with an admittedly
charismatic smile. It’s pretty hard to hate Michael Jordan.

So such questions are terribly uninteresting to me. I’m thinking that if we
all spent a little less time complaining about what’s wrong, and a little
more time doing one more thing right, the world would be that much better.

I’m beginning to sound like a greeting card. It’s time for me to go.

Regards,
Cecilia.

ObSal: Basketball isn’t mentioned at all in Salinger, but I can remember
several mentions of baseball (TCITR and TLM), shooting marbles (S:aI), horse
racing/betting activities (Young Girl in 1941 With no Waist at All), bowling
(An Ocean Full of Bowling Balls), streetball (S:aI), Hiking/Canoeing
(Hapworth), bicycling (S:aI), and probably a thousand others that I’ve
forgotten. What connection do sports seem to have to any of the Old Man’s
religious ideals? Kinetic meditation? Why are they so important?
