Aren't the opposing threads of inspiration and rivallry in art distressing? I find this particularly true of the lower levels of any artistic industry, where on one hand, there is an amazing level of empathy and `we're all in this together' feeling, and everyone feeds everyone else. Then, completely concurrently and not at all incongrously, everyone is at odds with one another, no one really wants anyone to succeed and everyone believes that *they* are the one with all the talent and promise. Patti Smith hated Debbie Harry. Jerry Lee Lewis hated Elvis Presley. I wonder at what level Jerry Salinger felt threatened by Ernest Hemingway?

Annie Hall. Sweet Salinger, now *that's* a movie! Woody may marry as many stepchildren as he likes, but gosh damn is he a great film-maker ;)
