Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary (already I'm demonstrating my
willingness to compromise by referring to an American dictionary), p. 670,
column two:

lake n [F laque lac, fr. OProv laca, fr. Ar. lakk -- more at lacquer] (1558)
1a : a purplish red pigment prepared from lac or cochieal
b : any of numerous usu. bright translucent organic pigments composed
essentially of a soluble dye absorbed on or combined with an inorganic carrier

Let's just skip the 'b' meaning, since it's evidently for biology majors.
Since Noah Webster apparently said that "lake" means "purplish red"....
And since my daughter's "Red Lake" Prang professional Colored (sic) Pencil
most closely matches the cover of my Bantam paperback TCitR.... And since
purplish red sounds suspiciously like "maroon" to me (although Noah prefers
"a variable color [sic] averaging a dark red").... I DECLARE THIS DEBATE TO
BE A DRAW (...even though I'd never be caught alive with a "maroon" TCitR....)

Cheers,

Paul
