Adios, regretfully!

Dear Bananafishers,

After some thought, it is with regret that I am going
to unsubscribe to Bananafishlist for awhile. It is
something I’ve been thinking about for a few weeks and
has nothing to do with any of the recent events here
or other folks leaving.

It boils down to simple logistics for me. As I’ve
written in probably almost every one of my postings,
I’ve no computer at home, so I partially read and/or
skim through as many of the daily Bananafish postings
as I can, here at work, on the sly.

As a result, the following issues have developed for
me:

1. I have become less productive at work – Reading,
checking and/or deleting incoming emails (almost all
Bananafish) throughout the day, is the same as being
interrupted by taps on the shoulder. Responding
intelligently to someone’s post with a well written
response really cuts into my time here as well. I get
behind, and must stay late to catch up so that
“questions” will not be asked. My time
management/personal time has become very screwed up
(or, to use an old New York expression, gone “down the
toilet” – Ob.Sal. probably used by guys like Horwitz
the cabbie, that goddamn Maurice, and perhaps Zooey
when he’s on a nicotine inspired rant)

2. I’ve become frustrated at not having the time to
fully digest all the postings – and there’s some
really good discussions going on. I have ended up
deleting bunches of them, some times each day when
they are still current, since I know I won’t be able
to read through them.

3. The ones I partially read at work, and save to go
over later, have been filling up my mailbox like
unread newspapers (saving 2 or 3 one day, then another
day, etc.). At this point, I simply don’t have the
time to go and begin saving them, much less beginning
the process of carefully reading and responding to
them.

4. My job ends on April 14th – this office is
shutting down and moving to Raleigh. There’s more
“mopping up” paper pushing to do here, and after the
14th, I will not have daily access to a computer –
thus will only be able check email at my public
library a couple of times a week; so I’ve got to cut
my incoming email volume. Now, a couple of weeks
before, is probably the best time to do this.

I’ve enjoyed being on this listserve (my first) and
hope to re-subscribe at some future time. I realize
that many of my postings were probaby more humorous
than of Salinger substance, and a bit music related,
but that seemed to be O.K. Maybe whenever I rejoin,
hopefully I will have re-read Seymore, Nine Stories,
Franny & Zooey and RHTRBC, so I can comment on them,
as well as re-reading the early stories, so I can say
what I want to say about several of them as well.

My very great thanks to Tim for being a most excellent
Keeper of this list, and taking it from one home to
another, with no inconvenience in the process. I
hope I don’t go through withdrawal and re-subscribe in
two days, making this whole thing look silly.

Fishers, you’re all a great bunch of folks! Keep it
percolating like all-nighter coffee. Goodbye for
awhile and my best wishes too you all:

Jason, Sonny, Elizabeth, Will, Scottie, Catherine
Marie, Cecilia, Lucy Ruth Pearson, Paul Kennedy (CBC’s
best) Matt, Mattis, Paul Miller, Bruce (left too?)
Tory, Rev. Bob Pigeon, Jim (though he’s probably
left), The Laughing Man (hope you do make it to New
York), Seane Draine, Meredith, Louise Z. Brooks
(sigh!), CM Fisher, Gene, Robbie, Benjamin Samuels,
Madhava, Becky
