TOUCHE, Scottie (...we MUST all decry the arid accent-less atmosphere of
cyberspace, which forces one to emit the aigu, and replace it with ALL
CAPS--which must, in our universe, be almost as bad as all those itsy-bitsy
baby letters....)

You've caught me leaping to the foolish conclusion that Pope Kafka, er
Kozusko, was arguing that an author's books should be read ONLY in the order
in which they were published. He did, indeed, distinguish family sagas,
with an overlapping cast of characters, from fiction in general, like AK or
W&P. I'm trying to remember whether it mattered that I read (and/or saw)
Henry V, before or after Merry Wives; and then whether I've ever read or
seen all of the wretched Henry IV stuff..... Just now, I'm trying to forget
Walter Scott....

But back to my general point, I think it's a form of literary fascism to
pretend that there's one and only one way to read an author's work--but
what's worse would be to suggest that "chronologically by date of
publication" should be the only way to go, as Matt, paraphrasing JDS
himself, seems to be suggesting.

Ahem....

Now as to ferments, young Scott (I thought the part about "insecurity"
displayed particularly brilliant insight....): I never touch the domestic
product. Made the mistake of taking a bottle of Canadian Club with me for
several nights of first-footing in Ullapool back in the early 70s.... At
the end of the last night, still full, the bottle smashed when it fell from
my hand during a particularly vigourous impromptu eightsome reel....
Flashing White Sargeant, or some such nonsense.... I've been a Lagavulin man
for years now, but the balance might just be subtly tilting towards
Laphroaig.... Purchase whisky stocks accordingly.

Cheers,

Paul
