(...any appearance in Luce's LIFE would probably have implied pictures, and
we've discussed our collective phobia of ANY attempt to represent Holden
visually at least a dozen times since I performed my first swan dive into
the bananafishbowl....)

What bothers me more, Scottie, is the assumption that underlies your
original post (with which you seem to be struggling in its sequal): That the
city that gave us Joyce, Yeats, Synge et. al. in the early years of the
century could in any way be considered a literary backwater by 1951....
