Subject: Question about reading Catcher

Earlier this week, I noticed an article in The Chronicle of Higher
Education suggesting that Catcher was a book that could be re-read in
college. Personally, I like to teach the short stories in college
courses but I wondered what some of the bfish thought.
Yes, I agree (before I'm spammed) that Catcher is best read when one
wants to read it, not as an assigned book, but the reality of
American students is that many simply do not like to read books and
do so only with strong prompting...so what do you think--is there a
suggested age for reading Catcher? Does it make sense to read it in
college?

taken personally. I'm a proud member of my English department and
trying to earn tenure. You don't have to love us for teaching
literacy, but it's a hard job and you don't have to dislike us for it
either.
