Thanks for the usual thoughtful and detailed response, Scottie.

Frankly, it's not all that important to me what "I think of Kafka as..." when
I am reading this story. It's part of what I think when I am reading it, but
certainly not the most important part, especially when I am sharing the
reading experience with others. But since it matters to you, of course I
think of Kafka as "an artist working with deliberation and thought." I think
if you read my post carefully, you'll see direct and clear evidence of that
in several of the offered readings.

As to "how one reading (the writer's) can fail to take precedence over all
others" -- that's easy. Like you, I don't happen to know that one reading
(the writer's), so when I am discussing the story, it can't very well take
precedence in the discussion. And yet the experience of the reading and of
the discussion remains useful and even worthwhile nonetheless.

And that suits me just fine.
