when it was apparent the germans were to march into
france, samuel beckett was visiting his homeland,
ireland.

he hurriedly left to return to paris (where he was in
residence since 1937). why, he was asked, was he
leaving the safety of ireland for the perils of paris.

he replied:

i prefer france in war to ireland in peace.

(i won't bore the listserv with the story of his role
in the french resistance. or how, after 1944, he wrote
his texts mostly in french (including 'godot').

i don't get why certain posters are the way they are
regarding things french, valerie, but i disagree.

think only of the rollcall of great french writers.
