yesterday i said that salinger used the word
'psychopath' to describe ford. i rechecked last night
and the correct term appears in the passage aaron
alludes to; it runs more or less: 'he writes under the
pressure of dead-weight beauty. he's the most gigantic
psychotic you'll ever meet. he *has* to be.'

of course, as jim points out, robert waner is not a
disinterested narrator, but a fellow competitor for
corrine's hand.
