i'm not sure if the tragic/saddest aspect might be
read back into the diary since we know how the
marriage turned out.

but i would say one senses a vulnerability in the
diary. that seymour admits he'll need to undergo
analysis for a slight overhaul. (but we then have
zooey's remark about what analysis did to seymour, and
this might be reading back too.)

if i recall correctly, doesn't seymour in the diary
say that muriel is trying to teach him to smile more?
now THIS gives me pause. this doesn't make sense with
'people plotting me make happy'.

(jim, 'raise high' is about events in 1942; the
suicide is in 1948.)
