A pint of pus

WHoever it was who asked about the pint of pus (the message truncated in digest form when I pressed reply so now I can't check),
As I remember it, the pint of pus comment is buddy's decription of arriving on the plane to see Muriel after Seymour's death, He 'wept like a slob' for the entire flight, but just before getting off he overhears a women behind him saying 'and do you know, the next day they removed a pint of pus from that lovely young body of hers'. He gets off the plane grinning entirely inapproriately, given that he is meeting the grieving widow.
What the signifies exactly, I don't know.
