yes, lucy-ruth has it right. buddy then goes on to
say that he can't be constantly running back and forth
from hilarity to grief. the hilarity is hearing about
the pint of pus, the grief is knowing that a good poet
is dying down the road (from the girl).

i don't know what it means, but it always struck me as
somewhat misogynistic.
