i'm an uncomplaining boring lurker & although i have, so far, nothing of value to say, i want to let you all know how much i've been enjoying the freewheeling discussions & digressions, both jds & tenuous-jds, even the hissyfits -- i especially like the net/talmud idea -- gonna ruminate on that one for awhile -- malcolm, your friendly cajole about putting on your shoes & socks & grabbing your bicycle made me laugh out loud -- thanks!

I missed the original "McLaughlin" post, but the issue seem to be what is appropriate and what's not appropriate on this list. We've skirted this issue before, but the discussion never got going. forgive me for repeating myself, those of you who are sick of hearing me say this:

Bananafish: a list where people discuss JD Salinger exclusively, or a list where JDS readers and fans discuss things, presumably somehow related to Salinger?

Listservs are self-moderating. The majority rules by default, since traffic on a list is defined entirely by the people on the list. Threads that nobody finds worthwhile end when people stop replying to them (why then, you ask, do I continue sending differnet version of this essentially unchanging opinion to the list?!! One last shot.)
