I believe the kind of banning involved with Catcher is not overt. When I was
a freshman, my high school had one copy, with certain key pages torn out. My
sophomore year, the book curiously went missing. I believe librarians
excercise their own brand of censorship, stocking the shelves based on their
moral values (our librarian was still cutting pictures out of National
Geographic and removing underwear ads when I graduated).
