The "Fuck You" removal is exactly what I was thinking of. The to
protect innocence for being destroyed. I don't think Bickle was sane
when he started to drive the cab. He had just come back from Nam and
was internalizing a lot of hate from the war and the explosion at the
end was his release.

Another good moving that may or may not be relevent is Zelig. Zelig is
the ultimate conformist. Has the same problem that Holden has with the
Phoney's but responds in the opposite way. I just saw it again last
night and it is truly a remarkable film.

I missed the previous discussion about movies relating to salinger.
