Keillor Keillor Keillor.
Garrison Keillor. Read anything and everything by Garrison Keillor.
I'm not kidding. For a sixteen-year-old--or for anyone, I guess--I
suggest starting with his book "WLT: A Radio Romance". It's the most
reader-friendly, if you will, and requires no previous knowledge of his
characters, which are constantly scattered throughout his other books.

If you grew up in America, particularly in the suburbs or rural areas,
Garrison Keillor will bring your childhood to you in a way that I
suspect (and am jealous of, I must admit) Salinger brings the childhood
of New Yorkers to them.

Brendan
