In a message dated 98-03-22 03:07:00 EST, you write: << Thinking about it just a little bit, I've started to wonder whether the Bride's Father's Uncle (the Short Man, for short--I know; I'm cringing too) isn't a manifestation of Seymour in a story about Seymour where Seymour is very loudly absent. >> I've always thought that Roof Beam Carpenters was one of the stories where Seymour is most present, given Buddy's reading of the journal. Besides Hapworth , this is the most we actually "hear " from S directly. Even in Bananfish, S is not as forthcoming as the journal in Carpenters. It may also be the beginning of the Glass kids dealing with the ghost of S. Buddy just has the luxury of having Seymour be AWOL rather than dead. Take care, all. Robert
