I can't believe all the wonderful writerly sentiments that are being
expressed on this listserv. I feel like I've just discovered all the other
lepers on my island all hiding in the same cave. People get mad at me when
I express just how hard it is; how every step of the way can see utterly
pointless and aimless. But, as a certain author named J.D. Somethingorother
once said, the rewards, when they come, are very beautiful.

Was this the gentle maxim you were looking for (a difficult job for one
whose job it is to expose gentle maxims as the falsehoods they are)?

It's hard. But it's worth it.
