Cecilia, first of all, as I read your post my mind's screen flashed
on a large red poppy painted by Georgia O'Keeffe and my memory
recalled countrysides of red poppies in Tuscany and the painting of
them I didn't buy in Rome's Trastavere section two years ago when I
should have...but the real poppy link for me happened as a graduate
student at a New Jersey garden party...one of my grad school friends
and I had heated discussions about TLM and education (though English
section men, we were seeking our degrees in NYU's School of
Education)(this parenthetical wandering should give Scotty a better
target for his darts) and as we enjoyed what we knew was the
impending end of our proximity as students Matt reached down and gave
me some red poppy petals. In that moment it was as if I was the
narrator of TLM and instead of Gedsudki's narrative cruelty my friend
offered me poetic kindness. I still keep that faded poppy petal in
my reading copy of 9 Stories and as you can guess, it's quite a bit
more than bookmark. Thanks for you poppy colors, will
