Sorry Scottie, but you are the best evidence against your own claim!
During our years together on this list, I've enjoyed your jokes and
come to actually love your contrarian way of embracing folks here.
You aren't perfect and not always effective, but all writers fail and
yet your posts don't often fail to amuse and instruct me. Sure we get
down with "the serious & the edifying" but I think we are actually a
pretty funny bunch. Come on, robbie, with his way cool insights asks
funny questions and even his screen name is a good joke. I'll take
the blame for wanting serious and edifying discourse about Salinger
too badly sometimes, but you have to laugh at my silly ego and my
strange love of this list. Sometimes, I send truly ridiculous email
to this list and you've been a great one to point that out--but I
don't feel hurt--I'm glad to be read and know the hit and miss ratio
of my words is a number I never want to know. I could go on and on
about our funny sense of community or fish schooling or whatever...
Remember taking a person named "Toenail" seriously? Remember that
this list had an Indian presence named "Sundeep"? (Hi sonny, I know
you're listening. I'm still reading those books by Swami Vivekananda
you sent me...in "Qualifications of the Aspirant and the Teacher," I
needed only to read "In regard to the teacher, we must see that he
knows the spirit of the scriptures" to end my school term thinking
about how my next one will be better.) (That was a joke only if you
don't take it seriously!) Remember missing every one Scottie? I love
the ironic point of your post and hope your screen is laughing at my
rush to join this strand knowing that we really do laugh at ourselves
but not knowing a good enough joke to lighten up this screen with a
smile as much as I'd like to...nonetheless, ;)will
