Since your request here is in response to what Daniel posed as a question,
I'll presume that he isn't so sure either, and I'll hope to be forgiven for
intruding.

The Merovingian dynasty, named for Merovech, was a Frankish dynasty
sometimes considered the first French royal house. It ruled for several
hundred years in the middle of the first millennium CE and was responsible
for uniting most of Gaul (and subsequently dividing it, and uniting it
again, perhaps several times over). It was one of the first political
authorities -- and probably the first important one -- to rise in Europe
after the decline of Roman control.

Having not seen the movie, I expect the allusion is due more to the
mythico-pseudo-history that has come to envelope the dynasty, involving
strange and sometimes obtuse relevances to, among others, the Knights
Templar and Atlantis -- supposed magical powers, and even, yes, direct
descendance from the one and only Jesus Christ.
