on a recent discussion the list had on sylvia--

upon celebrating my birthday yesterday, a friend remembered the refrence i
made in passing about the poet's only novel (the bell jar) and thought that
it would make the perfect gift.. after unwrapping it i turned it over for
purusal to discover:

"A fine novel, as bitter and remorseless as her last poems-- the kind of book
Salinger's Franny might have written about herself ten years later, if she
had spent those ten years in Hell." --Robert Scholes, The New York Times Book
Review

received a rather hearty chuckle.
