I don't know. But here's my observation about Holden and Mr. Antolini:

Being patted by Mr. Antolini is the only thing in the whole book that
SCARES Holden. Nothing else--losing the fencing equipment, fighting
Stradlater, leaving Pencey, being on his own in New York, even his
fight with Maurice the pimp--nothing else makes him run away, scared
and sweating.
