I've always thought that the beauty of it (just as it is in "A Perfect
Day for Bananafish") is that the actions are incredibly ambiguous. It
could go either way ... as is the case with so many details in life.
That is why these elements of fiction get a grip on us. We really don't
know the answer objectively, and each time we read the passage, we may
find ourselves seeing things differently.
