Picking up old cigarette butts, literally; stretching for a point,
metaphorically.
If you'd like to see the ultimate character for picking up "fag-ends" and
being at the end of his rope, see the movie "Withnail and I," which is one
of the funniest movies in captivity. Withnail is the sort of fellow who,
while cursing the indignity of having to do it, might be one who would find
a not-quite-burnt-to-the-end cigarette and pick it up from the ground and
finish it.
