I would attribute this to the Phony Detector effect, too. But this time
Salinger seems to be applying it to Holden himself. It's as if he sets up a
multitude of tests for Holden; little koans to solve on his journey. He got
it right all along, rejected Sally Hayes, was nice to the nuns, didn't
sleep with the prostitute - but here, in his final quest, he takes the path
of the phony and is condemmed. And maybe that is why, not long after, he's
back where he started?
