'... The terms "chi-chi," "chic," "flirt," "lightweights,"
"modish," and "wasn't it rich enough for him?" suggest
an arrogant sneering to me ...'
That's exactly right. I am by nature cocky & arrogant &
was indeed being dismissive of what struck me then & still
does as a passing fashion - at least for people growing up
in our Western culture. In the sixties everyone studied
Zen & wore flowers in their hair. Who does nowadays?
Apart, maybe, from a couple of film stars disillusioned
with - or about to embrace - Scientology.
An Englishman trying to write a play would be advised
to know his Shakespeare or Pinter before moving on to
Moliere or Feydeau. A Frenchman hoping to make
a career in gastronomy doesn't start with a primer of
Thai cooking.
Similarly, I should think any boy coming from
a background both Rabbinical & Catholic might need
a good few years to exhaust the possibilities of that
baffling, challenging heritage - before engaging his mind
with the great problem of one hand clapping.
Or what future life form his karma might have in store
for him.
Scottie B.
