Anyone else noticed that Ring Lardner recently passed
away. I've seen two small blurbs on him in TIME
magazine (one being an obituary). It said he was one
of the black-listed screenwriters during the whole red
scare thing. I believe one of the movies he wrote went
on to either be nominated for an oscar and/or won an
oscar(can't remember which). Anyway, isn't this the
same guy who was mentioned in "Catcher in the Rye" or
some other J.D. Salinger book? Been a while since I've
read Salinger, though I used to read him religiously.
Back to Lardner, when he was put on the hot-seat and
asked if he had communist sympathies, he said
something like "I could answer that question, but I
would hate myself in the morning" and refused to
answer and was black-listed.
