OH...I see. I'd have to agree that academics aren't as big in the world
of ideas as they once were (so far as ideas current in mass culture
goes) -- so I see why you're more concerned with the type of section men
that aren't academics than the section men that are...

I think mass culture is a bit of an embarassment to American academia,
though, isn't it? I don't know if this is a sour grapes thing or not --
current ideas are too inaccessible to mass culture to really be all that
much of an influence, with a few notable exceptions -- so it's easier to
despise mass culture when you know you'll never be able to compete the
the Jerry Springers of the world...
