Jim, you make a good distinction...yes, there certainly are section
men and teachers who destroy literature just to build a bit of ego
mass for themselves...and you are right to see their new generations
hiding out as snobby theory wonks. I guess I'm thinking that
academics are not as central in the world of ideas as they once
were...in fact, sometimes I feel as though we've stopped "minding the
store" and anyone with some media savvy can come in and either use or
avoid the cash register (credits/degree) and still take what they
want. Most scholars are saps when it comes to media savvy. While the
web deeply affects academe, many of the gray beards are still arguing
about it as if computers will go away if they come up with the right
argument. So I return to my point--the section men of today want to
seize "idea turf" and publish it on the web. will
