Writing Fiction by Janet Burroway is one of the better books around
and it will help writers gain a more clear sense of craft. I've used
it to teach classes of college Creative Writing.

The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien is the book I'm recommending
to young folks these days. It's a collection of short stories about
the Vietnam war that are linked together.
