last night i noticed that it says "from a previously
unpublished preface..."

i wonder how much was left out by hallie burnett (who
owns the copyright, i assume??--there was no
acknowledgment of salinger). in fact, i wonder if
salinger was surprised to learn of it finally seeing
print 10 years after he wrote it.

(and here salinger went to the trouble of writing a
preface for burnett, and then it wasn't used.
