"You all seem to enjoy recommending books, so I break my observational silence to ask if you know any good books for a well-read 17 year old about to start college."

Britt-
I seemed to have similar troubles. Sometimes I feel like I read all of these books that are deemed AMAZING and yet I am left utterly unimpressed. The last book that I read recently and fell completely in love with was Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises. That may be too obvious a response, and chances are if you are very well read you have already read this one, but if not I highly recommend it. I absolutely adored it. Otherwise I would add more "typical" responses to this question like Heller's Catch-22, Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse - Five , Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men , or Burgess' A Clockwork Orange. Hope at least one of these suggestions is helpful.
