Back when plans for the reprinting of "Hapworth" were first announced,
there was lots of smart speculation on the motives and particulars
behind the move. We discussed some of the speculation here, I think,
but I haven't checked the archives. One of the more interesting (and
plausible, as far as I can tell) scenarios involved legal stipulations
about copyright and divorces. Once Joking Jerome published something
new, the copyright on his old works would revert to him alone, taking
the painintheass ex-wife out of the pecuniary picture...or something
along those lines. The publishing plans might've been a tactical move
with consequences entirely unrelated to such romantic things as
seclusion and genius et s.w., and cetera.
