I hate those inevitable and ill-advised comparisons to Salinger and
Catcher. I grew up a few neighborhoods and a couple of years apart from
Jonathan L. in Brooklyn, so to me it was dead on the mark for much of the
details. We, too, got gentrified to the point where nearly everyone I
knew then was kicked out or priced out and ended up outside the city. I
myself like Fortress for a lot of reasons, not the least because much of
what Lethem writes is material I too have mined over, though from a
completely different perspective. I found myself liking his narrator,
his voice, and his situations, especially about racial issues in the
city, which rang true for me.

Anyhow ... welcome to the list! Just to add a touch of humanity 8-),
what name should we associate with "mnsnl"?
