harold ross, founding editor of the new yorker, died December 6
1951...succeeded by william shawn. salinger respected ross as originator of
the new yorker, head of it and all, but didn't really ever deal with him all
that much. salinger attended ross' funeral and found it an unholy mess. the
yale univ chaplain "rolled his r's, raised all his final syllables and used
his best posh parish vocabulary." salinger was worried for some reason
attempting to say anything about ross in his own magazine, but after E. B.
Whites obituary salinger felt a little better about getting out what he had to
say about the "good, quick, intuitive, childlike man." years later, in 1960,
a book on ross appeared that apparently disparaged ross and salinger ended up
writing a long open-letter essay in the editor's defense: it was some 30
pages long and was turned down by both Partisan and Saturday Review. The
essay is now lost.

i once owned the sublette, but no more. (long story).
i do recall however, that tim is dead right about the
letter references/unpub. titles. however, i'm 99%
sure that sublette had access *only* to the whit b.
letters (& the stories at firestone). i don't know
when u texas acquired their stories or the elizabeth
murray letters--which i imagine might have more titles
of unpublished stories. and, of course, the new
yorker archives didn't become available until the
90s--so sublette didn't see those. yagoda (and
alexander) did research in the ny archvies--but one
senses all of the ore wasn't mined (or published). i
think sublette mentioned one other unpublished item,
an essay about harold ross and the new yorker which
jds wrote (after ross's death), was c. 25 pages, and
was turned down by a mag or two. i don't know if i
believe *that*--but i've seen reference to this in a
place or two. (and speaking of ross, i recently read
his selected letters ('letters from the editor', i
think was title)-- and fell in love with him.)
