Maybe lots of folks do "narrative within narrative" or text within text,
but the way mr. salinger does is is pretty cool...seymour's "Dear Tyger"
letter in SAI, or his journal in RHTRBC, are good examples...and it's a
technique jds has been polishing since unpublished stories like "An Ocean
Full of Bowling Balls." Still, I think Laughing Man is my favorite
twisting of narratives...that red tissue paper flapping at the end kills
me as it brings both narratives crashing home to a red eyes and heart.
I had the luck to visit the new Georgia O'Keefe Museum in Santa Fe a few
weeks ago and her red poppy was all Laughing Man alive in its color and
"real" story, will
