i agree, the catcher has to know that the cliff is there, and part of phoebe's
innocence is the naivete which believes the field goes on forever.  holden,
however, stands on the brink of that cliff and knows it is there.  he may not
succeed in his ambition to be the catcher in the rye, but he certainly has the
qualifications to make the attempt.--matt
