I never saw the movie but your post has reminded me of something else.
This may sound silly but when I read The Great Gatsby I felt like the
book had some familiar, I would say themes but I wouldn't categorize
it as that, messages as Catcher did. For example when Gatsby died it
was maybe because he had lost some of his past innocence and morals
like his puritan work ethic and his family bonds. Also when Gatsby
died Nick was trying to preserve Gatsby's image as he was in his
formative years and not the corrupt person he really was. When I read
the part when Nick tries to wipe away the obscene words on Gatsby's
doorstep it was just like when Holden was wiping away the obscene
words from the school doorstep. This may sound far fetched but it came
to me when I read your post.
