Uhh ... can you direct me to said letters ??? As far as I know (and I'm a
bit of a Shakespeare queen as you may have noticed) the closest we have to
a personal letter to or from Shakespeare is one from one of his old school
friends trying to cage money off him

Yes ... this much we can infer. And, importantly, he went and got his
family a crest and was decreed a gentleman. So I think it was as much for
honour as gold. The Shakespeare family had gone through some tough times
before S. had his break.
