As far as I know (and I'm a bit of a Shakespeare queen as you may have noticed) the closest we have to a personal letter to or from Shakespeare is one from one of his old school friends trying to cage money off him > Shakespeare wrote plays until he made enough money to live > comfortably, then quit. Yes ... this much we can infer. And, importantly, he went and got his family a crest and was decreed a gentleman. So I think it was as much for honour as gold. The Shakespeare family had gone through some tough times before S. had his break.
