Salinger went further in separating himself from his work: he eventually
ascribed most of the Glass stories to Buddy Glass himself, and only near
the end of his writing career (S:aI, Hapworth) did he begin to reidentify
himself with Buddy. Even then, it was a perverse identification, in that
instead of Buddy Glass moving back toward Salinger, Salinger seems to have
become Buddy Glass. (I feel this to be quite detrimental to the quality
of the last three long stories, as I can barely stand Buddy and couldn't
bring myself to finish even 15 pages of S:aI.)
