this is called the evoluton of a thread. it is common among listservs and
newsgroups. the general idea is that if a discussion of, say, 'de daumier
smith' evolves into a dicussion about foreign languages in the us, as soon
as the thread loses all de daumier content  someone chages
the header to 'Foreign languages in the US (was Re: de daumier smith)'.

preferrably with an 'OT' in there, so that we all know it's off topic. :)
