I agree, I did at first start reading it without the dictionary, and after
awhile I had an idea of what the words are, but by my nature I like to know
exactly what things mean, so after getting the feel for the book and Burgess'
writing style, I liked to have the dictionary handy. I will agree though that
you should read at least the first few chapters without anything though to get
a feel for him and it.
