Joey,

i believe that 'intellectual' is a word coined by a radical group of
trappists in the thirteenth century to refer to a heathenous sect of
rabbit-hunters who had the odd idea of naming things in such a way that
no-one else could understand the object anymore. this allowed them to hold
complex discussion in the thriving peasant marketplaces and not have to
worry about being understood. and to be able to pay for a large sack of
potatoes the amount they would have paid for a small bag of roast chestnuts.

this may well not be true at all but my source assures me it is so.
