You know, funnily enough, the lyrics of that song could be said to echo in miniature Holden's journey through the book. You think, `Oh great, he's laughing in the rain, he's finally found whatever it is he's looking for'. Next thing you know he's back where he started. I'd like to know a little more about this blindness thing - perhaps it could be stretched to many other senses, too. For example, Holden wishes he were a deaf-mute, the ear flaps on his hat must impair hearing - I know a lot has already been said about exactly why he wears his hunting cap backwards (to which JDS would doubtless answer: `He JUST DOES!' (: ) So what's everyone been up to? You all too busy cooking up nice steaming vats of pumpkin soup to think of anything much to talk about Salinger? Camille P.S. and avowedly ObSal: for all you perverts out there I put a picture of the Bouguereau on my website (: : http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Theater/6442 Paul Miller quoted: > SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES > > They asked me how I knew > My true love was true > I of course replied > Something here inside > Cannot be denied > > They said someday you'll find > All who love are blind > When your heart's on fire > you must realise > Smoke gets in your eyes > > So I chaffed them and I gaily laughed > To think they could doubt my love > Yet today my love has flown away > I am without my love > > Now laughing friends deride > Tears I cannot hide > So I smile and say > When a lovely flame dies > Smoke gets in your eyes > Smoke gets in your eyes > > > >
