I'm currently playing around with the idea of writing a paper comparing Holden to Quentin Compson. I may also reference Huck Finn. Obviously, both Quentin and Holden are sensitive young men who feel out of place in the world; each, likewise, has a thematically important sister. However, in one Faulkner's lectures at the University of Virginia, Old Bill clearly states his belief that the two characters share only superficial similarities. I believe Faulkner bases his argument on the premise that Holden is full of love; whereas, Quentin is perhaps completely incapable of loving anyone other than himself. Yet, I think there's something that can be written about this along with the characters' inability to find a place in the world. Any thoughts or suggested readings? ***** A local guy writes songs about literature. He has one he 'dedicates' to Holden. I don't know the whole song, but the chorus goes something like: Run, run until you can't be found / Run until you find your paradise / Then take a look around / Find the rock where someone wrote 'Fuck you' That's all I know. The line after next is something about 'when dreams come true'. I'll try to get the full lyrics, if anyone is interested.
