I'm not sure I agree that there are really significant parallels
between Quentin and Holden, their relationships with their sisters are
so different, for one. Holden seems to perceive Phoebe as an example of
pure spontaneity and innocence as opposed to Quentin's preoccupation by
innocence destroyed by sin - the result is, or should be total
damnation whereas I think Holden is more just sad about what life does.
Hence his preoccupation wih Alfie (although he would obviously be
preoccupied with it anyway) who has never lost this. (Sorry if that was
a bit incoherent).
I'm not raining on your parade, though. I do think it is a really
interesting idea and would love to read your paper if you do write it.
You might change my mind if you had really thought about it, that
they're not that similar is just my gut response.
